The Art of the Brick Exhibition

There have been some very good exhibitions at the ArtScience Museum, and this is yet another one of them!  I've always been a fan of LEGO, buying kit sets, reading through the instructions thoroughly before I start building the model.

Nathan Sawaya is a New York-based artist who creates awe-inspiring works of art out of some of the most unlikely things.  His recent works of art feature large-scale sculptures using only LEGO.  I am amazed at how much time and how many LEGO pieces used for each sculpture.

Yellow - 11,014 bricks used
"Probably one of my best known pieces.  Yellow always draws a lot of attention from adults as well as children. Why? I think we grown-ups appreciate how cathartic 'opening oneself up to the world' can be for our souls. And the kids? Probably because yellow guts spilling onto the floor looks cool. For me, this piece is about the metamorphosis I have been through on my journeys (2006)" - excerpt from souvenir booklet purchased.

Swimmer - 10,980 bricks used

Facemask - 770 bricks used

An Artists View - 11,561 bricks used

Square Torso - 9,957 bricks used

Parthenon - 30,210 bricks used

Dinosaur Skeleton - 80,020 bricks used

This exhibit would appeal to anyone, young or old, whether you are a LEGO fan, or not a fan of LEGO.  At the end of the exhibit, there is a space where you can create your own LEGO art, fun for all ages!

The Art of the Brick exhibition is on now until 14 April 2013Please note that this exhibition has been extended until 26 May 2013.
