Project World Colours 2014 - February: Red

The colour red was also featured in 2013. So, this month I had to challenge myself to find more red objects.

So here goes . . .

Extreme Sailing Series 2014, Act 1 - Singapore

For the first time, Singapore hosted the opening round of the 2014 Extreme Sailing Series. This annual world tour was held over four days (20 to 23 February), where 12 teams competed for the top spot at the Marina Bay Reservoir.

Having the race at the Marina Bay Reservoir means the course is close to the shore, providing and challenging race for the teams and excitement for the spectators.

It was a fun and exciting day had for both the spectators and the sailors. Even if you're not into sailing or don't know too much about it, the event is still fun to watch.

The next stop for the Extreme Sailing Series is Muscat, Oman: 19 to 22 March, then Qingdao, China: 1 to 4 May, St Petersburg, Russia: 26 to 29 June, Cardiff, UK: 22 to 25 August, Istanbul, Turkey: 11 to 14 September, Mediterranean: 2 to5 October, and finally to Sydney, Australia: 11 to 14 December.

The GREAT-branded new London Routemaster bus

Here are some pictures of this brand-spanking new Routemasster model (London Bus), which is in Singapore for a month.

This double-decker is a diesel-electric hybrid. It has both a diesel engine and an electric motor powered by a lithium battery pack that is recharged when the bus is cruising or braking.

Found! A real pie in Singapore!

The hunt for a good pie in Singapore is over! If you've read our post on The Singapore Pie Hunt, you will know how hard it has been to get a good pie here.

The perfect pie has to have a crispy, crunchy pastry that is not dry and ingredients that fill the inside of the pie.

I ordered a Steak and Cheese Pie. Sorry I did not get an inside shot of this as after I took a first bite, I literally inhaled the rest of the pie . . . it was that good!

My steak and cheese pie cost S$4.90 and my cappuccino cost $$1.90. Whilst the coffee was nothing to rave about, you wouldn't expect anything terrific at that price. The steak and cheese pie was, as I mentioned AMAZING! It is the best pie I have had in Singapore so far.

The place where this pie can be found is a small cafe called Wall St Deli Cafe. They have no indoor seating, but has a small outdoor seating area. They import their pies from Australia. They also serve hot dogs, pizza, salad, grilled sub sandwiches, pastries and hot and cold drinks.

Here Today. Gone Tomorrow

Singapore's landscape changes everyday. We all know that.

We have lived in the same condo out East for the last two years, and have been admiring the house across the road. We have seen it change from being a family home, to a home for 'working girls', to an abandoned home.

Then a sign went up.

The photo below was taken sometime in January. You can partially see the blue sign for the construction firm, and the house with the demolished carport.

I left the house this morning at around 8am and the house was still there.  However, when I came home at around 4pm I saw this . . . 

It certainly is sad to see this house go. With a lick of fresh paint on the outside and renovations done on the inside it would have made for a nice family home.

I assume another low-rise condominium is going up in its place.

Nothing is ever around for long in Singapore! Singapore is growing and changing in a much too rapid pace and must slow down.

NZCC Waitangi Day Celebrations 2014

It was a hot, humid and overcast day in Singapore on 9 February, but that certainly did not deter some 500 people from missing out on a day to celebrate all things Kiwi.

This years' Waitangi Day Family Fun Day, organised by the NZ Chamber of Commerce (Singapore), was held at the Australian International School.

Waitangi Day is New Zealand's national holiday, which commemorates the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi between the British and the Maori, on 6 February 1840. It is celebrated annually on 6 February.

I had the wonderful task this year of taking photos, whilst soaking up the atmosphere.

There was a wonderful live band playing good Kiwi songs that we all know and love.

There were a number of very good stalls, selling everything from sausages, to pies, ice-cream, to healthy snack foods, NZ Beer and NZ Wine and L&P to name but a few.

There were some very good raffle prizes such as hampers, voucher for an Avanti Bike, Beer Fridges, dining vouchers, even a hamper from Kiwi Corner Dairy to name but a few. Proceeds from raffles sales went to the Singapore Red Cross.

Hubby was lucky enough to win a lovely hamper from Foodpath, who specialises in bringing the finest and natural products from New Zealand. Check out the range of New Zealand goodies that we got!

There was a Kapa Haka Group from Avondale Grammar School who despite having rehearsed for just a week put on an excellent show. The boys and girls sang the NZ Folk Song - Tūtira mai ngā iwi, and there was a good solid performance of The Haka by the boys.

For the second year running, there was a Kid's Talent Show. There were a total of 7 participants, who each received an Skyline Luge Sentosa voucher. Here are some photos of the participants:
